VIENNA, Austria - Benevolent Filipino organizations in Austria have launched an appeal for the victims of the strong earthquake that hit the islands of Negros and Cebu.

“In the midst of thousands of our brothers and sisters from Northern Mindanao and parts of the Visayas who are still reeling from the tremendous devastation caused by Sendong last December 2011, we are appealing for financial help for the victims of the recent earthquake that hit Negros and Cebu,” Elmo Carreon of Migrante Austria said.

The Philippinische Katholische Gottesdienst Gemeinde. under the leadership of Fr. Ron Sandoval, SVD. remitted the amount of 1,730,00 Euros or equivalent to P100,000 to the victims of the earthquake.

The amount transferred will be used to secure food and medicine for distribution at relief centers that will be set up by the rural Missionaries of the Philippines (RMP) Negros-Panay Region, led by Fr. Gilbert S. Billena, O.Carm.

RMP reports there is a need for drinking water, food, medicine and tents to house the displaced residents in eastern Negros.

In an email sent to ABS-CBN News Austria, Billena admitted that many families are reluctant to return to their homes after the earthquake, preferring to build makeshift shelters in the highlands and the mountainous areas.
