Ten suspected New People's Army members were killed in an encounter in Rosario town, Agusan del Sur province, the military said Thursday.

Lt. Col. Dennis Gammad, commander of the Philippine Army's 36th Infantry Battalion, said government troops and an undetermined number of NPA rebels were still locked in a fierce gun battle in a mining village in Rosario town as of this posting.

Gammad said 10 rebels have been killed.

The military officer did not mention if there have been injured soldiers in the clash.

On Wednesday, the military also claimed killing five NPA rebels in separate encounters in Camarines Sur province in Bicol region.

The Philippine Army said its troops encountered the rebels in Libmanan and Lagonoy towns on May 19 and May 17.
