MANILA, Philippines - The mayor of Tuguegarao City, who was shot in the face in front of a hotel, is in critical condition and was transferred to a hospital in Manila on Tuesday.
Councilor Michael Ting said his 72-year-old father, Tuguegarao City Mayor Delfin Ting, was airlifted to Manila around 10 a.m. Tuesday and was brought to an undisclosed hospital.
Ting said his father was in critical condition due to a gunshot wound in the face.
Police earlier reported that the city mayor was standing in front of the Delfin Hotel and Restaurant when blood suddenly flowed down in his face. The incident happened around 6:15 p.m..
In a follow-up report, the Tuguegarao City police said the mayor was shot in the face by an unidentified assailant.
Senior Superintendent Mao Aplasca, Cagayan provincial police director, said that the bullet came from a .22 revolver.
Aplasca said the bullet entered the left portion of the mayor's face, near the nose and got stuck in his right cheek.
Councilor Ting believes that the assassination attempt was politically-motivated.
